Please join us in congratulating Mykira on achieving his HiSET!🫶
Usually we tell each graduate's story, but this time, Mykira wanted to personally tell you her story:
“Growing up in poverty, with a family who didn’t attend college, let alone graduate high school, I always knew I had to make a change for myself. At the age of 17, I was kicked out of high school and shortly afterwards my life took a turn for the worse. I was sleeping peacefully when suddenly I became very hot and woke up to my family home on fire. After this, my Mom, disabled brother, and I were homeless for months until my Mom was able to get back on her feet.
I started stealing and reselling what I stole just to make money. I was able to work, but the thought of stealing brought quick money, so that’s what I did. It didn’t last very long because I was in and out of jail for years at a time, and had given up on finding a decent job because of my criminal background and not having an education.
At some point, I decided that I can’t live my life like this anymore, I’m still young, there is still time and hope for me. That’s when I found Goodwill and I met Ms. Janet. I look at her as someone who gave me another chance at life, an angel, a mentor and most importantly my good friend. If someone like me that has been through homelessness, financial difficulties, sexual assault, family issues, etc can turn their life around, there’s no doubt that anyone can. If you just want it bad enough you can eventually become successful. It all starts with getting your HiSET and in my opinion, go to Goodwill and Ms. Janet.
l am currently registered at SLCC in Lafayette and will soon begin my classes in Nursing! Thank you, Goodwill Acadiana, for making a difference in my life!"
